Most of us learn how to apply make up by watching our mothers, grandmothers, and friends as we grow up, meaning that very few of us actually learn how to apply mascara “properly”. From time to time, we can all use a tip to help improve our look. Try one of these mascara tips next time you are putting on your eye makeup and see how it can change your look.
Curl your Lashes – but Not with Lash curling Mascara
Before you apply your mascara, unless you have naturally expertly curled lashes, you should take the 10 seconds or so to really curl your lashes. Curling your eyelashes will give you that “open eye” look, and it will have your lashes perfectly framing your eyes so you truly look your best.
Never trust only in those mascaras that promise to “curl” your lashes for you. These are seldom effective and often just leave their users disappointed. If you really want to go that route, spend the extra money and invest in a good quality eyelash curling brand of mascara.
It’s All About the Color
Sure black mascara may be the most predominant color out there, but that doesn’t mean that it’s the best color for your eyes! Black mascara is great for anyone if you are going out in the evening, but definitely do consider other shades for day time looks. Those with naturally light lashes or brown eyes should stick with brown shades of mascara. If you have red or blond eyelashes, go for a lighter brown shade. Dark brown eyes almost always look best when paired with a dark brown mascara, even for nighttime wear.
Choose the Right Mascara Formulation for You
Don’t just grab any old mascara that you find on the shelf; actually see what the mascara is meant to do! There are a number of different types of mascara out there, such as waterproof, thickening, lengthening, volumizing, hypoallergenic, natural, organic… the list goes on and on. Really think about what you are looking to improve upon when it comes to your lashes and choose a mascara formulation based on your needs and not necessarily on price.
You don’t always need Mascara on your Lower Lashes
A lot of women start off applying mascara as young girls by applying it to both the upper and lower lashes, but you certainly do not need to apply any mascara to the lower lashes! Sometimes this may make you look a bit “too done up”, so if you are going for a more natural look you should stick to just applying mascara to the upper lashes (especially if you have long lower lashes!).
Use a Mascara Primer
Mascara primer products are great for both making your lashes look longer and for having your mascara stay and stick to your lashes better. If you’re looking to increase the longevity of your current mascara, try applying a primer first before you apply a color coat. You will definitely see a difference in how your eyelashes look!
