Checking Out Waterproof Mascaras

26 August 2010 | by Courtney

If you are like most women, you spend a good part of your first waking hours tediously applying makeup to your face between taking a shower and rushing off to work for the day.

Is anything possibly more disappointing to then have that makeup that you so carefully applied to your face be ruined because your mascara decided to run down your face?

Mascara may “run” for several different reasons, the most common being:

  • Sport activities/Sweat
  • Humidity
  • Crying/tears
  • Rain
  • Swimming

Several of these can strike on any given day, which is the reason why several women choose to wear waterproof mascara rather than other types that risk running down their face by noon. Some women also argue that waterproof mascara actually lasts longer than other mascara types, and does not “smudge” or leave dark circles under their eyes after a few hours.

What makes Waterproof Mascaras “Waterproof”?

Though a lot of cosmetic companies are rather quiet about the substances that they use in their cosmetics, it is strongly suspected that what is used to make waterproof mascaras “waterproof” is the use of a fat (this may either be animal or synthetic). Fact is an oily substance that has proven time and time again in many different instances to completely repel water.

Which Waterproof Mascaras are the Best?

There are a whole lot of different types of waterproof mascaras out there, especially as almost every cosmetic company out there has their own type. Here are some of the most favored waterproof mascaras that are currently on the market today:

Avon “Wash Off” Waterproof Mascara

Avon is a well established brand that often supports natural cosmetics. The best part about this mascara as opposed to other brands is that you are actually able to remove this mascara from your lashes at the end of the day with normal facial cleanser (some waterproof mascaras won’t come off with even eye makeup remover!).

Lancome Aquacils Waterproof Mascara with Keratine

Why this waterproof mascara is one of the best is because the inclusion of keratine also helps strengthen eyelashes, which also allows your lashes to grow longer and fuller than other types of mascara that may be on the market today.

Cover Girl Marathon Waterproof Mascara, Cover Girl Professional Waterproof Mascara and Cover Girl Remarkable Waterproof Mascara

If you’re looking for a great “budget” waterproof mascara, then Cover Girl is your girl! These mascaras will stay on all day, won’t smudge, and you can even wear them if you plan on going swimming! Be sure that you do come armed with eye makeup remover, however, if you plan on using these waterproof mascaras a they can otherwise be rather difficult to remove.

Olay Aqua Care Waterproof Mascara

Oil of Olay has begun making some great cosmetic products, one of them being their Aqua Care Waterproof Mascara. This mascara won’t come off even if you’re stuck in a thunderstorm! Much like the Cover Girl waterproof mascaras, you need to have eye makeup remover on hand to be able to remove this product at the end of the day.
