Choosing the Right Eyeshadow for Green Eyes

24 August 2010 | by Courtney

Have green eyes but you’re not sure just what eyeshadow colors and shades will help really make them stand out? You’ve come to the right place! There’s a whole lot of information out there for blue, brown, and even hazel eyes, but as green eyes are one of the rarest shades around learning just what eyeshadow for green eyes is best can be hard to come by.

What NOT to use

Let’s start off by going over just what colors probably are not the best choices for those of you with green eyes. The first color that should be avoided is any shade of blue. Blue shades of almost any color will just mute your stunning green eyes – no matter what shade of green they may be – and can even appear tacky and garish.

Pastel shades also tend to just wash out your green eyes, so at all costs avoid using pastels on your eyes. A good general rule is to try not to go for any “cooler” colors, which also includes shimmery silver tones and white eyeshadow.

What TO use

Fortunately there are a whole lot of different colors out there that will really make those green eyes pop! Neutral tones always work, but try to go for more golden tones, like bronze shades, coppers, and darker browns. Lighter shades of neutral tones include peachy shades and apricot colors. If the neutral shades of eyeshadow that you choose also include a golden shimmer, all the better!

  • Purple-based tones also look great. When on the hunt for eyeshadow for green eyes, look for:
  • Deep purple tones
  • Plums
  • Mauve shades
  • Medium pink colors (there are some fantastic funky pink shades out there for green eyes!)

What you should do before you go shopping for eyeshadow is really examine your own eyes. Green eyes often also include some other tones and colors, like flecks of gold, yellow or brown. If you notice you have any other shades or tones in there, choose some eyeshadow colors that match those tones! The eyeshadow is to be used to really draw out and bring attention to all of the colors that are in your eye.

Some other helpful hints

Eyeliner is an important consideration when it comes to eye makeup. One thing that those with green eyes should generally avoid is jet black eyeliner. Black eyeliner is probably too harsh for your eye color, so opt for brown shades (you can go as dark as chocolate), bronzes, and golden tones.

If you’re wondering what to do with the array of eyeshadow you may come home with, it’s all about learning how to apply it properly. For the lighter tones, such as peaches, apricot or taupe colors, use these to really highlight your brow bone. Save the darker shades for the crease of your eyelid to really give your eyes some depth and attention, and use the medium shades, like mauve and lilac, for the eyelid itself.

Most importantly, try the eyeshadow out! Take a sample of the eyeshadow shade you’re interested in and try it out on the back of your wrist. If it goes well with your skin tone and your eye color, it’s a good choice.
