Everything You Need to Know about Permanent Eyelash Extensions

15 August 2010 | by Courtney

Who has naturally long, beautiful eyelashes? Not a whole lot of us! As there seems to be either ineffective or only temporary solutions for us with shorter eyelashes, more women are beginning to consider long-lasting permanent eyelash extensions.

The alternative to having the permanent eyelash extensions is using mascara until your very last days, applying false eyelashes (which is quite difficult and the glue can be extremely irritating) or spending tons of money on products that promise to help grow and thicken your eyelashes – only to then do absolutely nothing for them.

Permanent eyelash extensions are a PERMANENT WAY to keep your lashes long, luscious and full. The procedure itself is typically a one-time procedure, meaning that you do not have to apply false eyelashes any more or have semi-permanent eyelash extensions replaced every 2 months or so.

The permanent eyelash extension procedure can take any where from 30 minutes to a couple of hours to complete. During the procedure, any where from fifty to one hundred individual hairs are placed onto your lash line, one hair at a time. Alternatively, the hair may be “weaved” into your lash line, quite similarly to how fake hair can be “weaved” onto your head. The hair being used may be real or synthetic, and the procedure can cost any where from $100 to $500 USD.

As this procedure grows in popularity, especially in Asian countries like Japan and Korea, new procedures seem to be developed every so often which increase the effectiveness of your permanent eyelash extensions. You will end up with fuller, thicker, more beautiful eyelashes but there are some drawbacks as well:

The cost. This is not a cheap procedure, especially if you had a less-than-experienced beauty therapist apply them the first time and need to have them redone. Bear in mind that if anything goes wrong during the procedure, your insurance company is not likely to cover the procedure, which means you may be out of pocket a whole lot of cash!

The risk to your eyes. Do bear in mind that this is a procedure which is taking place very close to an important and incredibly sensitive area of your body – your eyes! Should anything poke, prod, or damage your eye, you may be suffering from serious consequences due to the procedure for years or for the rest of your life.

The best way to avoid any mishaps during the procedure is to meet up with a few different beauty therapists that perform the procedure. Ask them what sort of experience they have, and for any references or examples of their work so you can see if the work they provide is something you would be interested in.

It is also very important to have someone who routinely does permanent eyelash extensions apply yours; do not offer yourself up to be a beauty school guinea pig! You may pay a lower price tag for the procedure, but you are putting yourself at risk. Once you find a therapist you feel comfortable with, book a consultation and make sure you discuss the pros, the cons, and what you are expecting at the end of the procedure.

This article is incorrect. What is being described is the process of semi-permanent lash extensions and they DO need to be touched up every few weeks. Natural lashes grow out and the extensions adhered to them will grow out with them. The ONLY permanent extension option is surgical, costs thousands and must be done by a physician.
