Applying eyeshadow may seem like some sort of art, something that only makeup artists can do really well.
Truth be told, with the right tools and knowledge, you can be applying eyeshadow like a pro, too! Here are some eyeshadow techniques to apply to you daily makeup routine to really polish off your look.
1. Start off with the right stuff!
Nothing is more important in any aspect of the makeup application process than starting off with the right tools that will give you that desired effect. This means throwing out those cheap sponge applicators that come with your eyeshadows and those tiny brushes that come with you blush, and investing in some good quality makeup brushes that will last you well over 2 years (if you take care of them properly). You can choose natural hair or synthetic hair brushes (it’s more a matter of preference than quality of application) and, if you take proper care of you brushes (i.e. cleaning them daily) you will get that desired look every time.
2. “Prime” yourself appropriately
Just as with any artist, you want to start off with a clean, clear canvas. Wash and moisturize your face, and follow up with the application of a makeup primer, concealer, foundation and loose powder. Preparing your skin properly will also guarantee that your eyeshadow stays on properly, and it will help bring focus right to where you want the attention to be – your eyes!
3. Now we can get to the eyeshadow techniques!
One of the best eyeshadow techniques you may ever learn is about placing a tissue directly under your eye area so that no drifting eyeshadow or pigment dust falls onto your face. This will help keep your skin looking clean and that tissue will help give you that final, polished look!
Another basic though often ignored eyeshadow technique is the application of the lighter shadow. A base shade should almost always be applied over the upper lid, right from the lash line right up to the brow bone. The base shade is usually a lighter shade from the color palette that you’ve chosen. A darker shade is then applied in the “crease” (the natural fold between the brow bone and upper eyelid) to give your eyes some depth.
To really polish off and complete the look, use a highlighting or light shimmer shade to dust right along the brow bone.
It’s important to choose eyeshadow colors that will also work with your skin tone, eye color, and even hair color. It may seem a bit overwhelming, but go to any beauty store with the intention of spending some time checking things out and you will be able to find a couple of different eyeshadow shades that will work wonderfully.
4. A couple of other eye enhancing/eyeshadow techniques
Even on your most “natural” of days, eyeliner will truly bring out your eyes. A thin line of brown or grey eyeliner will go a long way in helping define your eye shape and your lashes; for a more dramatic look, got for black pencil eyeliners or even liquid liners!
An eyelash curler is a great choice, and a definite “must” if you are applying false eyelashes.
Last but not least, never forget the mascara! One or two coats of dark brown or black volumizing mascara will really make your eyes shine.
