Fake Nails: An Overview

15 August 2010 | by Courtney

Long, classy nails are definitely something that every woman wishes she could have and could keep, though sadly those long nails tend to be something that most of us women can only dream about. It seems that nails just won’t grow long enough or stay strong enough, making it downright impossible to keep lengthy nails. Because of this, fake nails have become increasingly popular, especially as having fake nails can be one of the least expensive “beauty treatments” out there!

There is more than one choice out there when it comes to fake nails. The first type of fake nails are the acrylic nails. Acrylic nails are made up of both a monomer and a polymer solution. These materials will cover the entire surface of your “real” nail and is then shaped and formed to extend beyond your natural nail’s length, thus giving you a fake, yet longer, nail. You can choose the exact length you would like your acrylic nail to be.

Acrylic nails are a great choice because they are the least expensive amongst the fake nails, most nail technicians are pros when it comes to applying them, and they are extremely durable. Nail polish also holds well to acrylic nails, meaning you won’t have to do nearly as much damage control as you would with other types of nails. The downside? Acrylic nails, if applied improperly, may look “think” and obviously fake. Sure, your nails may be fake, but that doesn’t mean everyone else has to know it too.

TIP: You can also get acrylic nail tips that only cover the top bit of the nail and extend outwards from there. This can save you from needing to spend extra money getting your nails filled every 2-4 weeks.

Gel nails are another popular choice amongst women. Gel nails are typically set with use of a UV ray light which helps shape the fake nails to your natural nails, thus giving you a perfect fit and a great seal (this means a smaller chance of developing a bacterial or fungal problem between the natural nail and the fake nail). Gel nails are also fairly durable and take nail polish well (though not as well as acrylics). Gel nails are increasing in popularity, but before you go to just any nail salon to have your nails done, make sure that they provide you with references and have a fair amount of experience before allowing them to do your nails.

Wrap nails are another type of nail that are lesser known and comparatively seldom used, but are still available to you. Wrap nails are usually made of silk, linen, paper, or fiberglass. These nails are glued to your fingers in a similar fashion as acrylic nails. These nails will look more natural than an acrylic nail, but the downside is that they are not nearly as durable. If you are somewhat hard on your hands and your daily life places a whole lot of demands on your fingernails, consider another type of fake nail as these nail wraps will almost certainly break or chip right on off.
