When a woman often sees black eyeshadow in a beauty store, she’ll walk in the other direction. Black eyeshadow can be pretty intimidating, since applying too much of it can definitely leave you looking messy or some could argue “trashy”. Other women say they would only use black eyeshadow for their lash line, which is what their eyeliner is for.
Black eyeshadow can actually be used by all eye colors, eye shapes, hair colors and skin tones. It is one of the few eyeshadows that absolutely any woman can pull off, just as long as she is familiar with the correct technique or techniques that should be used so that she can accomplish the look she’s going for. That is why black eyeshadow, while frightening for some, is considered to be one of the most “classic” eyeshadows known to women.
When you are planning out how you will apply your black eyeshadow, remember that any dark eyeshadow is to be used to create a “shadow” effect. Lighter colors should be used to highlight. Check out the shadows on your very own face, especially around the eye area, and envision how you would like your eyes to look. If you are skilled enough, you can make drastic changes to the shadow-area around your eyes.
Start applying black eyeshadow by NOT applying black eyeshadow. Start off with a buff color or neutral shade and cover your entire eyelid with that color. If you have shimmer in your eyeshadow, that’s also a great way to add some extra “drama” to your look. Take that same neutral shade and apply it to the outer lower eyelid as well.
If you are going for a dramatic look, grab a shimmering silver-gray toned eyeshadow and apply it to the very inner eyelid and then blend it out towards the outside of your eye lid.
Now it’s time to apply the black eyeshadow. Take the black eyeshadow and press the color right to the outer corner of your eye so that a sideways “<” shape is created. Continue to slowly blend the black eyeshadow both inwards and upwards to the crease of your eyelid and continue to blend towards the center of your eyelid. Then take the black eyeshadow and create a thin line along your lower lash line with it. Grab a white eyeshadow and place just a dash of the white eyeshadow above the black eyeshadow to highlight your brow.
To really give yourself the sexiest smoky eye, take black eyeliner and run a very fine line of liner tight to your upper lash line, starting from the outside of your eye to the inside of your eye. Use the eyeliner to create a line along the lower lash line as well, and follow up by smudging the eyeliner with a sponge or with your finger tip. Finish off the look by applying black mascara to both your upper and lower eyelashes. You may need 2 to 3 coats.
Remember, practice makes perfect! If you do not have much experience with black eyeshadow and are planning on going on a hot date, do a couple of trial runs with the black eyeshadow so you can perfect the “look” you’re going for.
