How to Choose a Mascara Brush

26 August 2010 | by Courtney

Mascara is an integral part of our beauty routine. Really, if you were even to forego everything else that you used cosmetic-wise on your face, the one thing that you would need to wear to maintain your appearance would be mascara.

Mascara brings attention to your eyes by opening them up and thickening your lashes. Eyes are almost always the first thing that men and women both acknowledge on a person’s face, so it is important that your mascara is applied right and with the right tools.

Not only is the mascara you choose important when it comes to the application process, but the mascara brush that you use is incredibly important too! Forget the brands and the different shades out there; if you do not have the right mascara brush for your eyelashes then your time and effort may be a complete bust!

NOTE: Mascara brushes are so important when it comes to the application process that cosmetic companies will actually patent their specific brushes so that another company may steal their scientifically designed brushes!

The type of mascara brush that you choose to use highly depends on the “look” that you are trying to achieve. Some things to take into consideration when choosing a brush are:

  • The length of the bristles
  • The space between the bristles
  • The shape of the brush itself

If you’re going for a thicker lashed look: If you want to have thicker, fuller looking lashes, then you will definitely want to choose a mascara brush that has the bristles positioned very closely together. This brush is ideal for anyone with sparse or thin lashes.

If you’re going for longer lashes: If you want to obtain longer lashes, then the type of mascara brush you should be choosing are those with longer bristles. That extra length that the brush offers will help extend the mascara right to the very tips of your eyelashes, which of course will give you that longer lash look.

If you want to reduce the amount of clumping: To reduce any sort of clumping mascara, you will want to choose a mascara brush that has bristles which are spaced more far apart. This is a better choice for those who want a natural look, but is the exact opposite of what anyone who wants that thicker, fuller look should choose.

If you are going for even application: Even application of mascara can easily be achieved if you choose a curved mascara brush as opposed to a straight mascara brush.

If you are trying to reach all of your lashes: To reach all of your eyelashes, including those in the very corner of your eyes, then you may want to go for a straight brush. A straight mascara brush offers you more flexibility when it comes to applying the mascara.

DID YOU KNOW: Even if you have bought mascara in a store that comes with a wand, you can actually go to your local drug store and buy a replacement wand! Or, if you need a particular wand for a particular reason, you can buy a mascara brush and use it just when you need to.
