How to Choose Eyeshadow for Brown Eyes

24 August 2010 | by Courtney

Ever been completely frustrated after entering a beauty store or the beauty section of any department or drug store? With all of the different eyeshadow options out there, it can be pretty difficult to choose just what colors you think may or may not work with you.

Every eyeshadow out there seems to be within one or two shades of each other – what’s the difference? How can you possibly rummage through these thousands of different shades?

There just isn’t enough time in a day!

Luckily there are some rules out there on how to choose the right eyeshadow for brown eyes – and they aren’t too complicated! The fortunate thing about having brown eyes is that brown eyes can almost pull off any eyeshadow shade out there, which leaves the decision down to a few other things, such as:

  • Skin tone
  • Hair color
  • Preference

Read on to learn about what colors will and which ones will work best for your brown eyes.

Brown Shades

Unlike any other eyeshadow/eye color makeup combination out there, pairing your brown eyes with brown eyeshadow is generally recommended. Brown eyeshadow shades are a perfect match for your brown eyes; the key is to choose a brown shade that will draw out the “specs” of color in your iris or the different brown tone or tones that you have going on.

If you have a lighter shade of brown eyes, then choose lighter shades of brown eyeshadow that match the brown iris of your eye (in daylight, not indoor lighting). Similarly, if you have darker brown eyes then opt for darker brown shades that are similar to your own eye color. Browns are always a fantastic choice if you are going for that more natural yet still defined look.

Purple Shades

Purple colors are a fantastic choice for any dramatic or fun nighttime eyeshadow. Purples do come in a number of different tones, such as:

  • Lavender
  • Mauve tones
  • Indigo
  • Royal purple

The shade that you choose is really dependant upon your shade of brown eyes. It is important to always test out the purple tone on the back of your arm and then hold it up to your face before you buy it. As a general rule, the lighter the purple tone the better it will go with the lighter shade of brown eyes. This is certainly not always the case so check out the eyeshadow in the mirror next to your face and see if it is one you can envision yourself wearing.

Other Colors

Other colors encompass, well, almost all other colors out there! Greens, golds, other bronze or light champagne tones will work wonderfully with your green eyes. Blue tones will also work, as will bright pinks and yellows if you are going for a more trendy and fashionable look. Greys and blacks will also work very well. In all honestly, almost any and every eyeshadow color will work well with your big brown eyes, so test them out and enjoy the options that are out there for you.
