How to Choose Lipstick for Fair Skin

Written by Courtney L. | 24 July 2010

Choosing a lipstick color can be daunting even for one who has been using and wearing lipstick since they were a teenager. How does one truly know just what color will compliment their skin tone and the clothes they are wearing and the make up they choose to wear that day…

Before you go and become completely frustrated with the task, know that there are a few simple rules to help you pick out an appropriate lipstick shade. It’s more dependent on your skin tone rather than the clothing that you are wearing or the shade of eye shadow you choose to wear.

If you have a fair skin tone, there are some basic shades that you should be going for. First, the most important rule: go for shades with a blue undertone. Light browns and beige colors with a pink undertone also work very well for anyone with lighter colored skin.

If you are looking for a gloss to apply over your lipstick, try to go for a shiny light pink shade of gloss with a blue undertone. Avoid any orange or yellow undertones, such as deep browns and dark purple.

When choosing a lipstick to buy, there are some things to bear in mind, such as:

The more expensive the lipstick does not mean the better the quality. You do not need to lay down a ton of cash to find a quality lipstick. Stick with the drugstore brands rather than the department store brands. You’d be shocked to find out just how many drugstore brands are actually made by the same department store companies, and they cost a fraction of the cost. It’s all about the marketing!

Certain shades can make your teeth look more white than others. Since the lipsticks that are appropriate for those with fair skin involve a lot of blue tones, your teeth will look whiter. If you go for a pink or beige shade with your fair skin, your teeth may not look as white as if you were to wear a bluish shade.

No matter what, experiment, experiment, experiment! All because this article says that you should choose a particular shade does not mean that you should run out and buy it without trying it. Never make impulse online purchases either unless you have tested the lipstick product in person at a store. You will be able to gage both the quality and how appropriate it is for your skin better in person than online.

Red lipstick goes with every skin tone – you just have to find the right one. All too many women claim that they cannot “pull off” red lipstick because it’s too dramatic or too gaudy. These women simply have not found the appropriate shade of red that will compliment their skin tone! If you are about to give up your search for that ‘perfect red” lipstick shade, visit a cosmetician at the beauty counter of any department store or drugstore and take recommendations.

Most importantly, take good care of your lips by keeping them well moisturized. This will help keep them plump, smooth and ever-so kissable.
