How to Choose Make Up for Green Eyes

29 July 2010 | by Courtney

Did you know that, amongst the most common eye colors on the planet, green eyes are the rarest? It is estimated that only 1-2% of the world’s population actually has naturally green eyes. Women with green eyes often feel neglected at the make up counter as the focus seems to always be on either brown, hazel or blue eyes, but don’t worry – there’s make up out there that will have your green eyes looking great!

Great Colors for Green Eyes

Though there are many different shades of green eyes out there, almost any of these colors below will be absolutely stunning.

The most basic color you can start with is brown. Darker browns, like chocolaty tones, usually work best with brown eyes. If you can find brown shadows with either a copper or gold highlight or shimmer to them, even better!

Dark and forest green tones, contrary to popular believe, can also really make your eyes “pop” if they have a copper or gold shimmer as well.

Yellow shades also look fantastic with green eyes. If you have ever taken a good hard look at your eyes, you probably have noticed some yellow specs close to the iris of your eye. Adding some a yellow eye shade of eye shadow to your eye lid will really bring out the green in your eyes.

If you want to go for some “less natural” colors, try darker purples, metallic shades, and plums. These shades are particularly great for a night out.

As for tones to highlight your brow bone or sweep on quickly before a busy day, go for apricot shades and taupe shades.

Bad Colors for Green Eyes

Almost never – EVER – choose a blue shade of eye shadow if you have blue eyes. Blues seem to zap away any of the light that green eyes have and can turn out looking very tacky. Try to avoid any shadows with a blue undertone if you have green eyes; these colors will not be doing your eyes any justice.

Silver shades also tend to take away from green eyes. Stick to gold tones, copper, tones, and any warmer shades unless absolutely necessary. A good rule of thumb is to avoid cooler shades and to stick with warmer shades when shopping for eye shadows for green eyes.

The color of your eye liner is something else that should be considered as well. Though black eye liner is a staple and can be worn by anyone, if you really want to make your green eyes stand out from the crowd try using chocolate brown liners or steel grays.

TIP: To really make your eyes stand out, buy a white eye liner pencil and line the rim of both your upper and lower eye lid. Follow up with a darker colored eye liner around the lash line for a very unique and trendy look.

Some colors that are said to be a “bad” color for your green eyes may actually be “great” for you, and vice versa. Take advantage of samples that are offered to you at your beauty store and find out what works for you!
