How to Choose Your Makeup Palette Colors

14 August 2010 | by Courtney

What’s the big deal when it comes to makeup palettes? A makeup palette is a wonderful way to both obtain and to create different, sensational looks with makeup that can be found all in one place! Makeup palettes include makeup combinations that will always look good together and coordinate, making the application of makeup and the selection of colors and shades quick and easy for you.

You can find several different types of makeup palettes, such as:

  • Eyeshadow makeup palettes
  • Lipstick palettes
  • Blush palettes
  • Combination makeup palettes that include all of the above

If you are new to the makeup scene and haven’t accrued a lot of different types and colors of makeup, go for a combination palette so that you have a good base for your makeup collection (which is sure to grow!).

Most makeup palettes, no matter if it is a combination palette or one that is specific to a certain type of makeup, has a running color theme involved. You can find numerous different color themes, such as summer makeup, dramatic makeup, bright eye makeup, or natural makeup palettes. The important thing to bear in mind is that, though there may be numerous colors in any given makeup palette, not all colors may necessarily work for you. When at all possible, try to choose a makeup palette that offers a majority of shades – if not all – that will work with your complexion and skin tone.

The great thing about makeup palettes is that the colors are generally movable and the kits are customizable. This means that if there are shades in a palette that do not work for you, you can replace them with colors that do! Oftentimes women will remove the lipstick colors and then replace it with shimmery or clear lip gloss shade. An unfavorable eye shadow shade can be replaced with a shimmer or highlighting shade, and you can replace your need for eye liner by including a deep, dark brown or black eye shadow shade to your palette. If you’re on the go, all you need to do is grab your makeup palette and some makeup brushes and you’re good to go!

A Basic Guide to Choosing your Makeup Palette

The colors that you choose for your palette will be based primarily on two things: eye color, and skin tone. Let’s start with skin tone:

Cooler complexions: these complexions have a more “bluish” undertone with a cooler, pink color to the cheeks. To compliment the cooler skin tone, go for any shades of makeup that also have a bluish undertone and use silver shades to add extra shimmer to your face.

Warmer Complexions: Warmer complexions have a yellow undertone. Choose shades of makeup that also have a yellow undertone or even an orange undertone (especially if you are choosing a lipstick color).

Blue Eyes: Blue eyes look fantastic with plum shades, chocolate browns, or even grey shades to really make them pop.

Green Eyes: Purples, ruby reds, amber-toned browns or other jewel tone shades can really work with green eyes.

Brown Eyes: Brown eyes can pull off almost any color out there! Some fantastic shades include dark violets, deep forest greens, and rich burgundies.

The key here is to also take note of any other specks of color that may be in the iris of your eye, and to try and draw them out. If you have brown eyes with yellow specks, then use golden shades and shimmers to really accentuate those colors.
