How to Create Your Very Own Prom Makeup Ideas

03 August 2010 | by Courtney

Prom is a once in a lifetime event! This means that you have to be feeling and most definitely looking your best (duh!). If you’re trying to come up with great make up ideas to wow and thrill your classmates with, you’ve come to the right place. Don’t just settle for those boring department store makeovers that a lot o the other girls will have; be adventurous and make a splash with these great make up tips and tricks!

Follow the Trends

A couple of months leading up to prom start checking some high fashion magazines (for the most part, skip those magazines that are geared towards teenagers) and check out what sort of make up is walking down the runway.

You can also check out some of the trendier, cooler makeup stores and see what seems to be selling there. Right now, bold and bright colors are definitely where it’s at, so if this is your prom year, start coordinating which bright shades will coordinate with your dress and ask the cosmeticians at the beauty store how to apply it best to bring out your assets.

Go Vintage

Be the opposite of trendy – go vintage! Choose one of your favorite Hollywood glam actresses from the 1920s, 30s, or 40s and copy their look. Bright, cherry red lips, white skin and eye liner are definitely all things that were fashionable when our grandmothers were young.

Treat Makeup like a Paintbrush

If you have a bit of an artistic flair, why not use that eye liner to make fancy lines or choose different ways to apply your eye shadow to create a whole new look for yourself?

Apart from these tips, there are always some “staple” prom makeup ideas that you must most certainly abide by. Let’s begin with…

Keep your Complexion Flawless

No, this does not mean that you need to pile loads and loads of foundation on your skin. It is key, however, to keep your skin looking youthful, healthy and fresh during your prom night. Wear a foundation that offers appropriate coverage only in spots where you may need it (like your chin and forehead), use cover up sparingly and brush on a peach or rosy blush with a shimmer to keep that youthful glow all night long.

Make either your Eyes or your Lips the Primary Focus

It is a big “no-no” to play up both your eyes and your lips on any given day because it is too overwhelming and will make you appear gaudy. This doesn’t mean that if you decide to have a strong lip that you should leave your eyes naked, and vice versa. Always have a nude lipstick or shimmer gloss on your lips, and always have eye liner on your upper eyelid and two coats of mascara on your eyes.

Bring your Compact and your Gloss – Leave Everything Else at Home

Many girls bring their whole makeup kit when they go to prom, though nothing could be more unnecessary! Bring your powder to dust onto your face a couple of hours into the night and have your gloss handy to swipe onto your lips after each meal (or kiss). Leave everything else in your washroom or bedroom at home where it belongs!
