Learning How to Apply Liquid Eyeshadow

24 August 2010 | by Courtney

Trying to get that dramatic look but that normal powder eyeshadow just isn’t cutting it? A lot of powder eyeshadows can fade or appear to be faded as soon as you apply them to your eyelid. For a truly stunning look and to stand out from the crowd, choose a liquid eyeshadow instead!

You can find liquid eyeshadow in an already prepared liquid form, or many of the powdered eyeshadows these days offer the option of simply adding water to the powder form so that your powder shadow can also be a liquid eyeshadow. There is absolutely no doubt that trying to apply liquid eyeshadow can be rather difficult, but with these steps and a bit of practice you will be a liquid eyeshadow application beauty pro!

Easy Steps to Apply Liquid Eyeshadow

STEP ONE: Choose your Eyeshadow

Just choosing what color you will be using can be quite the headache! If you are just looking to practice with something easy, choose neutral shades of liquid eyeshadow. Taupe colors, brown shades, champagnes and golds are all safe choices that are great for beginners. If you are looking for that more dramatic look, begin with liquid eyeshadows that will help give you that “smoky” eye (think grey and charcoal shades).

STEP 2: Prepare the Eyeshadow

If you are using a powder-to-liquid eyeshadow, then you can take the applicator and wet it with just a small drop of water. Rub the applicator very lightly across the eyeshadow before application.

Some liquid eyeshadow comes in a tube form. In this case, no real preparation of the eyeshadow is required – it’s already done for you!

STEP 3: The Application Process

Once you have the eyeshadow, run it very lightly across your lid and take care to smudge it evenly across, from inner corner to the outer corner. Do not bring the eyeshadow up above the brow bone, but rather stop at the brow bone.

TIP: When it comes to liquid eyeshadow, a lot of women prefer to start off with a darker shade. Some women find that this makes blending easier.

You can then use a lighter color (or hey, you can skip this step entirely!) to cover the brow bone and to also cover the part of your eyelid, just right underneath the bone. This will help blend the eyeshadow in and, if you choose a shimmery shade, it will add some extra “glam” to your look.

Lastly, take a very light shade of color (such as a pale brown, pink, light gold or silver) and then dust it ever so lightly in the corner of your eye. Some women will also dab some of that same color near just along the lash line to help make their eyes appear larger.

The key thing to remember when applying liquid eyeshadow is to always OVERLAP the eyeshadows that you are using and to never streak them across your eyelid. You want to give the illusion of the eyeshadow being natural, so really work on blending it in.
