Nail polish is known to have that glamorous, buffed shine, so why would any woman want to switch from that to a dull, matte nail polish?

Matte nail polish is a relatively new trend that has come onto the scene. OPI nail polish, as well as several other smaller “boutique” cosmetic companies decided to offer this new type of nail polish to the pubic, and it has become incredibly popular amongst many women. Matte nail polish offers a different look and different appeal that can complete a woman’s look where a shiny, glossed nail polish cannot.

What does a Matte Nail Polish Look Like?

When one first applies a matte nail polish to her fingers, it will look wet and glossy like a regular nail polish. As the polish dries, however, you will notice that the color starts to get a rather opaque, dull look. The color is strong, but the gloss and shine is removed.

Matte nail polish definitely works best with the darker shades, like forest greens, navy blue and purples. Lighter shades of matte nail polish can be an “acquired taste” for some, though several lighter shades of matte nail polish are really only meant for theater or the run way.

If you are bold, daring, and on the hunt for something new, then matte nail polish may satisfy this need. Otherwise, it is generally recommended that you stay away from this “fashion trend”.

TIP: A great alternative is to choose a “matte” top coat, several of which have recently come out on the market. If you are not willing to sink tons of money into a new fashion trend, you can buy a matte nail polish top coat that can be applied to any regular nail varnish. When the top coat is applied, you will then see it slowly dry to a more “matte” shade and color.

Where can I Find Matte Nail Polish?

A lot of drug stores, department stores, beauty stores, and specialized cosmetic shops offer matte nail polish, though they certainly can be harder to come by than the typical glossy nail polish shade. Drug stores tend to have very little selection, so if you are on the look out for a great new matte nail polish shade then try out a specialized beauty store so that you have more options.

Another great place to look for nail polish is the Internet. Be sure to check out any deals or promotions that beauty store online may have. Before buying any cosmetic on the Internet, always ask for any sample pictures of the product being actually worn, and always ask about the expiry date (all too many women have been burned by receiving expired cosmetics in the mail from beauty stores).

So though matte nail polish may not be the right fit for any one, you can always give a matte nail polish top coat a try if you are curious about whether or not it will look for you. Or you can pass up on the trend entirely and stick with your beautiful glossy nails!
