Must-Have Professional Beauty Supplies

01 June 2010 | by Courtney

Whether you are looking to open your very own salon or you want to run a business from your basement, the most important thing of all is to have the necessary equipment you need to do your job. If you are just starting up your business as a beautician, it can be a bit daunting and overwhelming to try and figure out just what equipment you will need in your salon, but fear not – we’ve got your hair and make up needs covered.

Make Up

All clients who visit your salon will expect you to have good quality make up and make up supplies – not necessarily “the best”, but fair enough quality and for it to be sold at a price low enough so that they can purchase it. Or, if you are buying this make up for personal use, it is important to know just what make up items are worth splurging on and which are worth passing on. The four pieces of make up that you need to ensure of are good quality include:

Foundation: every client expects you to have foundation that will make their skin look absolutely flawless. Having a stock of high quality foundation will go a long way

Blush: Good foundation leads to a rather bland, lifeless face. Selecting a quality blush to liven it up will certainly help highlight your client’s features

Lipstick: All women have a favorite lipstick, so you should have a color similar to her favorite in stock.

Mascara: A woman who has stunning lashes tends to not care about what ever else may be going on with her face. Choose a mascara that will lengthen the eyelashes and couple it with a great eye shadow and liner. Your client will undoubtedly be happy with the results.

You can purchase lower quality powders, concealers, eyeshadows, eye liners and lip liners and still achieve that professional and glamorous appearance.

Hair Tools

For anyone to have great looking hair, it is essential that you have a good quality hair brush! Having a better quality hair brush not only allows you to evenly distribute the oils in your hair to all different areas and lengths of your hair, but it also prevents damage to the hair follicle.

TIP: Many swear by using a rubber base brush with boar head bristles.

There are several different shampoos and conditioners on the market, so it is imperative that you choose one that will work with your hair type if it is for personal use. Be sure to buy these products based on your hair type (dry, oily, color treated, dandruff, etc.).

Another item you will need is a wide-toothed comb. If you ever have to comb through and detangle wet hair (who doesn’t?) then a wide toothed comb MUST be used – not a brush. This prevents critical hair damage and split ends, something you will be grateful for once your hair dries.

Lastly, a hair dryer is certainly an essential when it comes to hair products. Don’t worry yourself about buying the most expensive blow dryer on the market; a blow dryer is a blow dryer! For fine to normal hair, choose any blow dryer that is 1500 watts. For those with thicker hair, upgrade to 1875 watts.

TIP: Additional hair care products you may want include a volumizing mousse, straightening serum or hair spray, as well as a dry shampoo.
