Skin Care Advice: Knowing your Skin Type is the #1 Step to Beautiful Skin

09 September 2010 | by Courtney

No matter how well read you may think you are on the topic of skin care, we can all use and appreciate a bit of advice from time to time. For any woman or man who has suffered from pimples, wrinkles, dry skin or any other skin problems, this article is dedicated to you!

Yes, there really are different skin types out there – it isn’t some sort of hoax or marketing ploy! Knowing what kind of skin type you have is the beginning to treating your skin right. What oily skin requires is not the same as sensitive skin, and combination skin needs some special treatment as well! Here are the most common skin types:

Normal Skin: Though referred to as “normal”, this really is the least “common” of them all. Normal skin is defined as needing a rather simple cleansing and caring routine. Very little additional care or attention is required. Clean, tone, and moisturize as usual, and maybe give your skin a refreshing mask every once in a while

Oily Skin: If you have oily skin, there’s a good chance you’re well aware of it already. Oily skin needs a whole lot of extra care and attention. Oily skin can mean acne, break outs, pimples, large and visible pores, and just an overall “greasy” appearance. It is imperative that anyone with oily skin use products that are designed for oily skin only. This includes cleansers, astringents, and make up. Exfoliate your skin well and often (though not too roughly) and watch your diet. Fried and greasy foods will do nothing but exacerbate the problem.

Dry Skin: Dry skin feels tight and taut, and may even look paper thin if no make up is applied over top. Very much like oily skin, it is important that those with dry skin purchase products that are made just for dry skin. Drink a lot of water to keep your body and skin hydrated and use gentle cleansers with rich moisturizers.

Combination Skin: Combination skin can be a bit tricky, given that it is a blend of dry skin and oily skin on a small surface area. Those with combination skin tend to have oily spots around the nose, and dry patches on the cheeks. It is important to use mild cleansers, and to use astringents on only the oily parts of your face. When applying moisturizer, apply it mostly to the dry areas of your cheeks.

Sensitive Skin: Sensitive skin is on the rise, and is becoming an increasingly large problem for many women out there. Those with sensitive skin may have itching, rashes, or redness due to irritation caused by the sun, dust, dirt, or even fragrances and other ingredients in their creams, soaps and lotions. Sensitive skin can also strike seemingly any time and out of no where. Always focus on using only the most mild of skin products and seek out skin care items that are made JUST for sensitive skin. Always go for fragrance free and try to choose hypoallergenic products when possible.
