Treating Dark Under Eye Circles

It’s unfortunate that dark circles that appear under the eyes are often a hereditary trait that cannot be avoided. Dark patches beneath the eyes can also be a side effect of other medical conditions, such as liver or kidney problems.

For some people, even sleeping an hour less than usual one night will have them waking up with raccoon eyes. Some people are simply genetically more likely to suffer from darkness under the eyes than others.

The dark patches often result from swelling below the eye area which actually causes shadows to form. The dark circles you see are a result of these shadows. Treating this type of affliction means reducing the swelling so the shadows won’t form or at least are less visible.

Simple home remedies work quite well at reducing this problem. Sitting with a couple of freshly sliced pieces of cucumbers over your eyes for a few minutes will reduce the swelling and brighten the area.

You can also try using cold teabags. If you choose teabags, it’s best to let them sit in the fridge for a few minutes first to get them nice and cold. Chamomile or green tea teabags are particularly effective and also quite relaxing. Green tea also has some amazing health and beauty benefits.

If you’re in a rush in the morning, a quick rub with an ice cube can reduce the puffiness and offer some relief.

Using a concealer that is lighter than your foundation will help reduce the darkened look of the skin beneath the eyes. Be careful not to rub or pull at this sensitive area, since you can damage the skin tissue.

Adding an under eye night cream to your bedtime routine will help keep the area moisturized and less likely to puff up and show swelling and dark circles in the morning.

Be careful not to get the creams in your eye though, since this could lead to damage or difficulty with vision. Wait ten minutes or so after applying the cream before going to bed, to allow the cream to absorb properly.

Sticking to a good diet and drinking plenty of water will help keep your body working as it should, and reduce the severity of under eye circles as well. If you find that home remedies don’t have any effect at all, you may wish to see your doctor to rule out the possibility of a medical condition, such as kidney or liver problems.
