Wondering what an acrylic nail powder is? If you have ever had acrylic false nails applied, then you have come in contact with acrylic nail powder. Acrylic nail powder can be described as a “polymer” powder that is used in the creation of the acrylic nail. This polymer is combined with a “monomer” material, usually in the form of a liquid, which then will create a paste that hardens to form what is referred to as an “acrylic resin”.
This acrylic resin is used for acrylic nails as it is both flexible and strong, and it is very much like our own natural nails that are both durable and have some “give”. The acrylic nail powder allows the false nails that we often use to be firm and long lasting; otherwise the fake nails we use would b nothing but a thin piece of weak plastic that is glued to our nails. This means that the fake nails we use would then break easily, they would not be flexible, and they would generally be a complete waste of our time.
How does Acrylic Nail Powder Work to create a Stronger Nail?
When the monomer and the polymer, the acrylic nail powder, are mixed, a chemical reaction occurs which then creates long chains of polymer strands. These polymer strands, when applied to any shape, conform to the shape and the linked chains then create a strong barrier across the entire nail (or where ever the liquid has been applied). Oftentimes, dyes and pigments are also added to the final resin (such as benzyl peroxide which gives it that white appearance). Color stabilizers are often added to the resin to prevent any discoloration that is often caused by exposure to the sun or any UV rays. This helps prevent the yellowing of the nails.
Different alternations may be made to the acrylic nail powder so that a gel nail or artificial fiberglass nail is created. For gel nails, this requires “prejoining” monomers into short chains (which are called “oligomers”). Oligomers have significantly more thousand monomers in length, which makes them inflexible once the resin hardens. This particular false nail will then harden to have a more glassy appearance.
When it comes to fiberglass nails, the acrylic nail powder or a polymer acrylic nail powder and a monomer liquid ix can be spread over the fiberglass nail wrap. If you are having it professionally done, the nail technician will wrap the natural nail in that fiberglass fabric and then apply this coating. The fiberglass fabric then absorbs this resin that has been created with the polymer and monomer substance, creating a thin yet strong and natural looking “fake” nail.
NOTE: Be very wary if you are using acrylic nail powder at home. This is a toxic substance that, when used improperly, can cause irreversible damage.
Mixing the acrylic nail powder with the monomer liquid to create the resin will create a vapor that is highly toxic. Because of this, it is highly recommended that any one with health issues or any women that are pregnant do not use this method to have their artificial nails applied.
